How the numbers are made
One calculation chain, one cost ladder, no invented norms
- 1
Farm loads
kW × hours → kWh/day
- 2
Water & pumps
0.002725 × V × H ÷ η
- 3
PV
kWp = kWh/day ÷ (5.0 PSH × 0.80 PR)
- 4
BESS
critical kW × 4 h ÷ 0.62
- 5
Cluster
0.65 × Σ peaks · 3I²R feeder check
- 6
Economics
capex ÷ grid cost avoided
Planning cost ladder (R/kWh)
- Solar PV · lowest routine energy — maximise daytime self-consumptionR1.10
- Grid off-peak · flexible pumping and schedulable loadsR1.65
- Grid blended · reference operating cost for savings and paybackR3.00
- Diesel genset · backup and emergency onlyR6.60
Both technical proposals, p4. Grid and diesel refresh from the LiveIndicators feed when the app has one. PV capex R14,000/kWp (PV-only, "not an EPC quotation"); BESS R8,000/kWh (Solar Guide benchmark); yield 1,650 kWh/kWp/yr.
Worked example — WeEarth Farm Energy Formula Summary
A dairy with a 100 kW cooling system running 10 hours and a 50 kW milking system running 4 hours:
(100 × 10) + (50 × 4) = 1,200 kWh/day = 1.2 MWh/day
Pumping: a farm moving 100 m³ through 50 m of head at 70% efficiency needs 0.002725 × 100 × 50 ÷ 0.70 = 19.46 kWh.
E_day = Σ(P × h × n × LF) · E_week = P × h × d · E_month = E_day × D · E_year = Σ(P × h × d).
