How to green this site

Likely toxicity to manage: hexavalent chromium, nickel, manganese dust, iron.

Plant on tailings to absorb and hold toxins
  • • Indian mustard (Brassica juncea) – Cr accumulator
  • • Sunflower (Helianthus annuus) – metal uptake, harvest and dispose
  • • Vetiver grass
  • • Rhodes grass
  • • Weeping lovegrass
  • • Sweet thorn (Vachellia karroo)
  • • Kalahari sour grass (Schmidtia pappophoroides) – dry areas
Steps per feature
  • • Dam: line or check the liner, plant reed beds on inflows to trap metals and sediment.
  • • Excavation / pit: reshape walls to safe slopes, return stored topsoil, let water settle as a wetland with reeds or backfill.
  • • Waste rock: cap with 30 cm topsoil, contour berms, plant grasses then pioneer trees.
  • • Plant / processing: dust suppression, tree windbreak rows downwind.
  • • Rehabilitated area: monitor cover each season; reseed bare patches.

Land to rehabilitate

Seeding rate
15–25 kg/ha grass mix
Lime (acidic tailings)
2–10 t/ha, set by pH test
Compost / biochar
10–20 t/ha
Vetiver spacing
1 slip / 15 cm along contours
Tree density
400–600 trees/ha on capped land
Tests still needed
tailings pH, metals (XRF/ICP), EC, sulphate, water quality

Metal-absorbing plants (mustard, sunflower) must be harvested and disposed of safely, never eaten or fed to animals. Confirm species with a tailings chemistry test.

Status tracks EVIDENCE, not an automatic verdict: "evidence missing" or "self-declared" is NOT the same as non-compliant. Only a recorded adverse finding is a failure — and it stays visible regardless of the overall picture. Statutory status comes only from recorded authorisations.
